Field Trip Description
Steve Hanneth from the Wiltshire Geology Group and Salisbury Cathedral has kindly arranged a special tour of the cathedral and the Mason’s Workshop on Friday, 9th October. The cathedral is famous for having the tallest spire in the UK and rests on compacted river gravel, making its foundations unique. The building stones comprise sandy limestones of the Portland Formation, fossiliferous Purbeck “Marble” and Bathonian Caen stone taken from the ruins of the 11th century seat of the Bishops of Winchester at Old Sarum. This promises be a very fascinating day. Unfortunately for those with work commitments this exclusive access is only available on week day.
10.15 arrive at Cathedral - coffee in the Cathedral cafe. You might want to consider a slightly earlier time of arrival to ensure a prompt start at 11.00
11.00 Meet at the front of the Salisbury Museum which is right opposite the Cathedral entrance. Walk round the Close for interpretation walk on the earth materials used in the different constructions around the Close.
12.15 Lunch - Cathedral cafe is good or lots in Salisbury - close by there is a Cafe also in Museum and seating in the Close for a picnic if weather good.
1.30 Convene at Cathedral entry door in the Cloisters. There is a sign which says that Masons’ Tours ‘start here’
1.40 Tour of Masons’ Workshops
3.15pm Disperse.
All walking is on firm ground with no gradients. The tour is of the Close is outside but Masons’ Tour is mainly under cover.
There is no charge as Steve has been allowed a guide freebie for friends and family. However each attendee is kindly asked to make a donation (we suggest £10) to the Cathedral which will be collected beforehand (the charge for the tour is normally £20).
Please note that the number of attendees is limited to 12 on a first come first served basis.
Important Notice: Bath Geological Society Insurance
Each person attending a field meeting does so on the understanding that he/she attends at his/her own risk. The Bath Geological Society has Public Liability Insurance Cover for field and indoor meetings, but Personal Accident Cover and Personal Liability Cover remain the responsibility and personal choice of the participant.
There may be an element of appropriate cover included in house insurance or in travel insurance: although Bath Geological Society activities are not particularly dangerous members are advised to check whether exclusions apply to activities in which they plan to participate in case they wish to arrange further cover. An annual travel insurance may be the best solution for any member who regularly attends field events: this again is a matter of choice.
Please note however that all members participating in overseas events will be required to have travel insurance for the duration of the event: this is so that participants are covered for Medical, Repatriation and Personal Liability expenses. The Personal Accident element remains the personal choice of the member and again members are advised to check exclusions so that they can make an informed decision about the cover they want.
