Lecture Description

A common popularisation of extreme climate change is that the Gulf Stream, a fast-flowing ocean current in the North Atlantic, will ‘shutdown’ with radical implications for the UK’s weather and climate. But how likely is this scenario, and is it even possible? Here I will review the science, including evidence from the geological record, and the possible implications.
