Lecture Description
Tepe Pardis, a significant Neolithic–Chalcolithic site on the Tehran Plain in Iran, is, like many sites in the area, under threat from development. The site contains detailed evidence of (1) the Neolithic–Chalcolithic transition, (2) an Iron Age cemetery and (3) how the inhabitants adapted to an unstable alluvial fan environment. The combined use of sedimentary and limited pollen analysis, radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating has led to a greater understanding of on how these human settlements developed. The second part of the talk will focus on the excavation the of the lithic assemblages from Mesolithic sea caves of Altappeh (southeast of the Caspian Sea) which has provided breakthrough insights into early human survival, hunting, and tool-making strategies
About the Speaker: Gavin Gilmore is a Trustee of The Museum of Bath Stone and Emeritus Professor at Bath Spar University. His research projects have included measurement and monitoring of radon (a ground gas that causes lung cancer); 3D visualisation of alpha tracks in solid state nuclear track detectors; mining pollution; air pollution; sedimentary analysis and microfossils in palaeoenvironmental analysis; geoarchaeology; 3D imaging and analysis of PM10s and PM2.5s including volcanic ash; shale gas exploitation; and the Energy Trilemma.
